Best Documentation Platforms According to AI Engines — 2026 Ranking

Confluence: 6/6. Notion: 5/6. Mintlify: 0/6. We tested 7 documentation platforms across 6 AI engines.

Which documentation platforms do AI engines recommend?

We asked 6 AI engines: "What's the best documentation and knowledge base tool?" The results show established platforms dominate, while developer-focused newcomers are invisible.

The Full Ranking

  • Confluence — 6/6 (recommended by all engines)
  • Notion — 5/6 (not mentioned by Perplexity)
  • GitBook — 4/6 (not mentioned by Perplexity, Gemini)
  • Docusaurus — 3/6 (not mentioned by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini)
  • Slite — 2/6 (not mentioned by Perplexity, Gemini, DeepSeek, Mistral)
  • Mintlify — 0/6 (invisible to all engines)
  • ReadMe — 0/6 (invisible to all engines)

Confluence and Notion Lead

Confluence achieves a perfect 6/6. Despite being frequently criticized for UX, its massive enterprise install base and content footprint make it the default AI recommendation.

Notion follows at 5/6, missed only by Perplexity. GitBook scores a solid 4/6, showing that developer-focused documentation platforms can achieve good visibility.

Mintlify and ReadMe: Developer Favorites, AI Invisible

**Mintlify scores 0/6 — completely invisible to all AI engines. **This is striking because Mintlify has become the go-to documentation platform for modern developer tools and APIs.

ReadMe, another popular API documentation platform, also scores 0/6. Slite manages just 2/6.

The pattern is clear: platforms that serve a niche (developer docs, API docs) struggle with AI visibility compared to general-purpose documentation tools. AI engines default to recommending the platforms with the broadest web presence.

Docusaurus: The Open-Source Middle Ground

Docusaurus at 3/6 shows that open-source documentation tools can achieve moderate visibility. Its integration with the React ecosystem and Meta's backing give it a meaningful content footprint, but it still falls short of universal recognition.

What Documentation Platforms Can Do

For Mintlify and ReadMe, the fix involves building content that positions them clearly as documentation platforms (not just API doc tools), creating comparison pages, and increasing third-party mentions through integrations and partnerships.

Rankings and citations in this post are based on EurekaNav's internal audit dataset (4 published deep teardowns: Fireflies.ai, Linear, Otter.ai, Notta.ai — all available at /case-studies) plus broader audit work across additional SaaS targets. Sample sizes are small. Where we cite specific patterns, they are qualitative observations from a limited sample, not measured industry-wide statistics.

Each audit queries 6 AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral) with high-intent buying prompts and reads every engine response. Methodology details: eurekanav.com/methodology.

AI engine outputs are non-deterministic. The same prompt can return different answers across sessions and time. Specific rankings or claims in this post reflect what we observed at the time of audit, not a permanent state. Re-audit dates and any material updates are reflected in this post's visible last-updated tag.
