The Big Four Dominate
**Intercom, Zendesk, Freshdesk, and Help Scout all score a perfect 6/6. **Every AI engine recommends them when users ask for customer support tools. This is one of the most concentrated top tiers across all categories we tested.
Open-Source and Modern Alternatives Are Invisible
Chatwoot, despite being a popular open-source alternative with strong community adoption, scores 0/6. Pylon, which is building a modern B2B support platform, is equally invisible. Plain, focused on API-first support, gets zero mentions.
Even Crisp, which has a significant user base, only manages 2/6 — mentioned by just Gemini and DeepSeek.
If you're a startup founder asking AI for customer support tool recommendations, you'll only hear about the established players. Modern alternatives with features like AI-native workflows, developer-first APIs, or open-source flexibility won't even appear in the conversation.
This creates a self-reinforcing cycle: AI recommends established tools → more people adopt them → more content gets written about them → AI recommends them even more.
The visibility gap is fixable. Newer support platforms need to build structured comparison content, earn third-party reviews, ensure clear product documentation, and create content that directly answers the queries AI engines process.
